Behind the Lens: Photographing Memphis Hip-Hop Legend Al Kapone for River City Lifestyle

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph Al Kapone, one of Memphis’ most influential hip-hop artists for a feature in River City Lifestyle magazine. As a photographer with deep roots in Memphis, capturing the essence of a local legend like Al Kapone was both a professional milestone and a personal honor.

Al Kapone

Al Kapone, born Alphonzo Jerome Bailey, is a true pioneer of the Memphis rap scene. From his underground beginnings in the late 1980s and 90s to mainstream recognition through his work on the Oscar-winning Hustle & Flow soundtrack, his impact on Southern hip-hop is undeniable. His songwriting and production credits span hits like “Whoop That Trick,” which has become an unofficial anthem for the Memphis Grizzlies, and collaborations with artists such as Lil Jon, E-40, and Beyoncé. Al Kapone’s story is one of creativity, resilience, and a deep connection to the city’s musical heritage.

The shoot took place at a location that felt quintessentially Memphis, full of character, grit, and soul. My goal was to create images that reflected not just Al Kapone’s legacy, but also his ongoing evolution as an artist. Whether he was framed against a backdrop of Al Kapone’s murals or caught in a candid moment between poses, Al’s energy and authenticity shone through. He was generous with his time and ideas, making the collaboration feel less like a formal session and more like a creative partnership.

Working with River City Lifestyle, a publication dedicated to celebrating the people and culture of Memphis made this project even more meaningful. Their mission to highlight local stories aligned perfectly with the spirit of Al Kapone’s journey and the pride he has for his hometown.

I’m grateful to have contributed to telling the story of a Memphis original through my lens. This project reminded me why I love photographing artists: every portrait is a chance to capture a piece of history and share it with the community that helped shape it.

Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes stories from my shoots, and check out the feature in River City Lifestyle to see the full story and images.
